Notes About Elizabeth (Betsy) Yerxa

Elizabeth, the eldest child of John and Catherine (Gerow) Yerxa, was born in 1775 in New York and came with her parents and three brothers as Loyalists. She would be named for her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth (Coutant) Gerow. She married John Brewer, a farmer proprietor in Douglas. She was also known as “Betsy.”

The 1851 census of York County, Douglas Parish, states that John Brewer was 77 years of age and his wife, Elizabeth Brewer, was 76 years. Both were infirm. A son, Cornelius, was 34 years of age and living with his parents. Elizabeth had been given a share in her father’s movable estate along with her sisters by John Yerxa’s will of March 1828.

Mrs. John Brewer died June 1, 1860 - 88 years. Died of old age. John Brewer, Upper Keswick, died October 24, 1863 - 91 years? (Taken from Church records, Douglas Parish, St. Paul’s Anglican Church.)

Catherine Brewer, daughter of Elizabeth (Yerxa) Brewer and John Brewer, Sr., was born in 1795. There was found evidence of Catherine Brewer marrying Ebenezer Stone February 17, 1814. Witnesses were: Thomas Fowler and Susan McGibbon. The ceremony was performed by David W. Gibbon, J. P. (There is a question whether this Catherine is the daughter of John and Elizabeth Brewer.)

James Brewer, son of John Brewer, Sr. and Elizabeth (Yerxa) Brewer, was born December 22, 1799. He married Hannah Haines on March 30, 1824. Hannah was born in 1808 and died in 1845. Children of James and Hannah (Haines) Brewer were:

William Brewer, son of Elizabeth (Yerxa) Brewer and John Brewer, Sr., was born in 1805. He was a laborer and Baptist in religion. He married Catherine (surname unknown), born in 1819. The children of William and Catherine Brewer were:

Abraham Brewer, the son of Elizabeth (Yerxa) Brewer and John Brewer, Sr., was born Aguust 14, 1808 and died April 14, 1889. Abrham married Frances (Fannie) Morehouse, daughter of Daniel Morehouse and wife, Charlotte (Fowler) Morehouse. He was a farmer. All of the family were born at Brewers Mills, York County, N. B. He had contracted typhoid fever before his death. Children were:

Henry Brewer was the son of Elizabeth (Yerxa) Brewer and John Brewer, Sr. He was born in 1804, and married in June 1878 Ruth (surname unknown). Children of Henry and Ruth Brewer were:

George Brewer was the son of Elizabeth (Yerxa) Brewer and John Brewer, Sr. He was born about 1806, and married Frances Titus. Children of George and Frances Brewer were:
